Dr. Gloria Schaab publishes new book on relationship between suffering and God
The Creative Suffering of the Triune God: An Evolutionary Theology on sale now!
Barry University Assistant Professor Dr. Gloria L. Schaab, SSJ, has released her newest book titled The Creative Suffering of the Triune God: An Evolutionary Theology.
Published by Oxford University Press and released September 18, the book details Schaab’s interpretation of the ongoing dialogue of theology and science concerning the problem of suffering. The scope and impact of human suffering in the last century have demanded an authentic theological response and impelled debate concerning God's relationship to suffering and the conceivability of the suffering of God. Schaab’s book focuses on the work of scientist-theologian Arthur Peacocke, which claims that the triune God is intimately involved with the suffering of the cosmos.
Developing this idea, Schaab proposes that an understanding of God as capable of suffering with creation provides an essential and efficacious response to the suffering of the cosmos and its creatures. Schaab explores her proposal in three contexts – feminist theology, ecological praxis, and pastoral ministry – as steps toward Christian praxis in response to the mystery of God within the pain, suffering, and death of cosmic existence and human experience.
Schaab is an assistant professor of Systematic Theology and director of the Master of Arts program in Practical Theology at Barry. She has published extensively on the theology of God, Christology, feminist theology, and evolutionary theology.
