Lou Marinoff,
Philosopher-at-Large
Professor Lou Marinoff addressed an almost full
house at Barry University on March 31th. His lecture, "Philosophy,
Ministry and Practical Theology: Ancient Pathways Meet at New Crossroads,"
formed part of the St. Thomas/St. Catherine Lecture Series.
Marinoff’s topic and dynamic presentation
style captured the audience’s attention as he spoke about
his work as a philosophical counselor. Noting that many problems
faced by individuals in today’s world are of a philosophical,
not a psychological nature, he proceeded to describe this growing
field. Meeting with patients on an hourly basis, philosophical counselors
discuss the client’s particular problem and then use philosophy
to both get at the root of the problem and to come up with a philosophical
resolution and, often, a practical solution.
Marinoff’s presentation was followed by
a lively question and answer session, the discussion continuing
even when the session was formally called to a close.
Marinoff is author of Plato Not Prozac: Applying
Eternal Wisdom to Everyday Problems and Therapy for the Sane: How
Philosophy Can Change Your Life. He is currently on leave from his
position at City College of New York. His work as philosophical
counselor, consultant, and lecturer takes him around the globe.
