Barry University presents educational summer science camp this week Second through sixth graders can participate in variety of activities, including mini rocket launches, lab work and a visit from Calder Race Track’s miniature horses
Over 30 local schoolchildren will be participating in Barry University’s School of Natural and Health Sciences’ annual summer camp this week [Monday, June 18 – Friday, June 22].
This week’s camp, based around the theme “Phun Physics,” will feature several photo opportunities, including toy rocket launches and a visit from Calder Race Track’s miniature horses. All the week’s activities will take place at Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores – I’ve also included directions below.

Science Summer Camp Week Three – “Phun Physics”:
- Mini Rocket Launch Demonstration
Soccer Fields – Barry University main campus Tuesday, June 19th 9:30 a.m. Student campers in grades two through six will be setting off homemade rockets to correspond with the “Phun Physics” theme.
- Special Guest Presentation – Calder Race Track miniature horses
Campus Mall – Barry University main campus Friday, June 22nd 10:00 a.m. The miniature horses from Calder Race Track will be visiting campus. Student campers in grades two through six will get a hands-on biology lesson, learning basic facts about miniature horses, and differences between caring for miniature horses and full-size horses.
The science summer camp is a four-week long program that began in 1997. Each week, the School of Natural and Health Sciences hosts approximately 35 students in grades two through six, who learn about science through interactive activities, field trips and guest presentations. This year’s activities have also included a field trip to Publix Supermarket and a crime scene investigation demonstration with BU professor, Gill Ellis. Next week, activities will have an environmental theme, including making “Get Well Cards” for the Earth addressing environmental challenges.

DIRECTIONS TO THE LANDON STUDENT UNION (Soccer fields – rocket launches): FROM THE NORTH: Take I-95 south to NW 125 Street. Turn left (east) at the light onto NW 125 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue. The Landon Student Union is on the southwest corner of North Miami Avenue and NW 115th Street. Visitor parking is available on the south side of the building.
FROM THE SOUTH: Take I-95 north to NW 119 Street. Turn right (east) at the light onto NW 119 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue. The Landon Student Union is on the southwest corner of North Miami Avenue and NW 115th Street. Visitor parking is available on the south side of the building.
Athletics fields are behind the Landon Student Union.
DIRECTIONS TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE (Campus mall – miniature horse visit): FROM THE NORTH: Take I-95 south to NW 125 Street. Turn left (east) at the light onto NW 125 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue. Turn left (east) onto NE 115 Street. Turn right (south) onto NE 2 Avenue. Main entrance will be immediately on your right.
FROM THE SOUTH: Take I-95 north to NW 119 Street. Turn right (east) at the light onto NW 119 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue. Turn left (east) onto NE 115 Street. Turn right (south) onto NE 2 Avenue. Main entrance will be immediately on your right.
