Barry University to host PeaceSong Concert Thursday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m.
 
MIAMI SHORES, Florida — Barry University will host a PeaceSong Concert on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Broad Center for the Performing Arts.

“PeaceSong” encourages dialogue between cultures otherwise torn by political conflict and misunderstanding. The concert will feature traditional and contemporary music from around the world that calls for an understanding to bring an end to violence. All the musicians who are performing were educated at the renowned Berklee College of Music.

“This is an opportunity for our community to be enriched by a rare musical experience,” said Sister Arlene Scott, Assistant to the President of Mission and Integration.

This year’s performance will include musicians representing three major faith traditions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

This year’s performers include:

Evan Gutierrez
Evan Gutierrez began performing professionally with his father since the age of 13 and touring nationally by the age of 15. From an early time, Evan fused together Latin American musical styles with jazz, R&B, and hip hop. Evan quickly rose to the top of the Atlanta live music scene performing with both locally and internationally known artists and groups. Later attending and graduating from Berklee College of Music as a scholarship student. Evan now works on a variety of projects pertaining to cultural awareness and social justice issues through music.

Mike Torres
Mike Torres began studying the piano at age 11, but it was at the age of 13 that he discovered his passion for the electric bass. He started a local funk group called "The Curb" for which he wrote and arranged original music. Mike also played electric bass for three years in the Nordhoff High School Jazz Band and won state and national competitions all three years, playing throughout Southern California, Hawaii, and San Francisco. During his senior year, he organized the first Jazz combo for his High School called "The Equilibrium Jazz Quintet." He also played in concerts with great musicians such as Maynard Ferguson and Anne Kerry Ford. Mike is currently attending the Berklee College of Music on scholarship were he studies electric bass performance.

Uri Sharlin
Uri Sharlin has been an accordionist, pianist, and composer since his arrival to New York in 1999 and has become an established "world" musician. His knowledge of both Western and Middle Eastern music feeds his unique composition style, expressed in various projects among them Anistar, Kaiku, Sul/Norte, Ayyub, Antony and the Johnson, and Roberto Rodriguez Quintet. His band the Cardamon Quartet released their first album in 2005, which was warmly received by the critics.

Paula Green
Paula Green studied congas and drum sets throughout her high school years, earning a reputation as a player-to-be-watched in Chicago's bustling jazz and R&B circles. She attended Berklee College of Music starting in 2001, and quickly became a staple player in Boston's live hip hop and R&B scene. Green performed in some of the city's most important venues, playing jazz, hip hop, Latin jazz, and funk. She even garnered an invitation to 2003's International Hip Hop Summit in Havana, Cuba. Green continues to perform with some of the East Coast's busiest working bands as a percussionist, drummer, and vocalist.

Marco Godoy
Marco Godoy, steeped in the folkloric music of his country and skilled in the contemporary music of his generation, has earned a reputation as one of Venezuela's most notable up-and-comers. Learning the cuatro (Venezuelan guitar-like instrument) at age five and enjoying a three year stint in the cast of the famous "Contesta por Tio Simon" television show, Godoy was a veteran performer before he reached his teens. After acting as musical director for some of Caracas' busiest bands and attending engineering school, Godoy set his sights on an education from the famed Berklee College of Music. By '04 Godoy was set apart from his student peers, receiving multiple awards for his compositions from BMI, who quickly signed him as a composer. By the time he had graduated Godoy had shared the stage with Latin music superstars like Irakere, Bobby Carcassas, and Ruben Blades. Arriving in L.A. in 2006, Godoy works as a producer, instrumentalist and engineer and continues to collaborate with internationally known artists on Latin music's cutting edge.

Anatassia
Anastassia Zachariadou performs on the flute and qanoon, which is an intriguing horizontal harp-like instrument. After receiving her flute diploma, she traveled to Budapest to continue her education in flute multiphonics and acoustics, under Istvan Matuz. Zachariadou expanded her studies in Western classical music to also include Greek and Eastern classical music working with Tolis Tsardakas, Kyriakos Kalaitzides, and Zyiad Rozam. Zachariadou is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. At present she is working as a teacher and performer in Boston and New York.
