Over 200 expected for ‘Shatter the Silence’ vigil at Barry University next Tuesday, Nov. 27

Over 200 members of Barry University and the surrounding community are expected to gather next Tuesday, Nov. 27 for “Shatter the Silence,” a candlelight vigil to remember victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The vigil, which is also open to the public and several other South Florida colleges, will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Barry’s main campus mall in Miami Shores. As part of the program, members of Barry’s Psychology Department will present a monologue in memory of Dr. Marie DesRosiers, a Barry faculty member who lost her life to domestic violence in 2002. Dr. DesRosiers served as an associate professor of Psychology at Barry from 1993-2002.

In addition to the monologue, the program will also include prayer led by Barry President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD and presentations from Women in Distress of Broward County, who have collaborated with Barry to bring domestic violence events to campus throughout the month of November.

The vigil ends this month of events at Barry University, all aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence as a social issue. Other events throughout the month have included a domestic violence survivors panel, the national clothesline project, an international domestic violence education forum and a “baby shower” to collect items for women’s shelters throughout South Florida.
