Barry professor to lead four South Florida schools at Carnegie Hall on April 21

Barry University professor Dr. Giselle Rios, director of choral and vocal studies, will lead more than 160 performers in five choirs April 21 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Rios, who just two years ago was the first Cuban woman to ever conduct at Carnegie Hall, will direct Barry University’s 30-person choir, as well as students from the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, St. Thomas the Apostle, South Miami High School, and Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College of the City University of New York. Music accompaniment will be by the South Beach Chamber Ensemble.

The all-Hispanic, prime-time, 8 p.m. performance at Carnegie Hall is being produced by the Mid-America Production company, which will feature zarzuelas choruses (the Spanish-language opera form that came from Spain) from Maria La O and Cecilia Valdes, which were arranged specifically for this event by Grammy-nominee Alfredo Munar. The performance will also feature Chôros No. 10, Rasga o Coração by Villa-Lobos, and a world premiere of Gloria in Spanish, which will feature guest baritone singer, Eduardo San Ementiro.

Dr. Alan Mason and Dr. Martin Camacho of the Barry University Fine Arts department will accompany the group to play the piano. Dr. Beverly Coulter, professor of fine arts, will also be singing with Hugo Marcos, Barry’s professor of voice.
