A pitch for a wish – Barry University and Make-A-Wish Foundation team up

Miami Shores, Fla. – Andres, an 11-year-old from Coral Gables who suffers from Crohn’s disease, will throw the honorary first pitch on Saturday, April 25, to kick-off “The Make-A-Wish® Weekend” at Barry University; the baseball double-header and family-fun day beginning at 11:50 a.m. surrounding Barry’s final baseball and softball home games of the season.
Andres’ wish is to meet Florida Marlin’s shortstop, Hanley Ramirez this summer. If enough funds are raised this weekend, Barry’s Facility and Event Management class will meet their goal of $10,000 to grant his wish. They have been fundraising for The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida since last year.
If they raise these funds, Andres will be the second Make-A-Wish child in Miami-Dade County whose wish will be granted thanks to Barry’s class and the foundation’s South Florida chapter.
Prior to the game Saturday, April 25, the Sport Management Association along with Barry head baseball coach Marc Pavao and head softball coach, Danielle Penner, will present Andres with a Barry jersey displaying his name on the back along with other gifts. Some of the featured events on Saturday include a kid’s carnival and children's games and an Olympic team competition, Sunday.
This year alone, Barry’s class raised more than $8,000; enough to grant Deshell’s wish to go to Disney World. The six-year-old from Hialeah suffers from Astrocytome Antiplastic, or cancer of the brain. The aspiration is to raise the remaining funds to grant Andres’ wish too. On the average it costs about $5,000 to grant a child's wish.
“I’m lucky to have the unique opportunity to work with students and young-adults through our Kids for Wish Kids®/Wishmakers® on campus,” said Deirdre Trevett, Special Events Coordinator, Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida. “These are educational programs that allow students to work with one another and enable them to develop leadership skills while raising money for a great cause.”
The event is free for Barry students, faculty and staff and $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens of the community.

From the South:
