Miami Shores, Fla. - Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine announced 19 of its podiatric medical students have been awarded American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. The scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to:

The APMA donated a total of $152,000 to podiatric medical students for scholarships at the eight colleges of podiatric medicine throughout the country. Barry’s 19 students were selected based upon their academic achievement, financial need and involvement in community service.
“This is a tremendous gift that APMA has made to the future of podiatric medicine by supporting our podiatric medical students; we are sincerely grateful,” said Dr. John Nelson, interim dean and clinical dean for Barry’s School of Podiatric Medicine.
In 2005, the APMA’s philanthropic arm, the APMA Educational Foundation, assumed the responsibilities of the Fund for Podiatric Medical Education (FPME) and transferred its endowments into the newly created APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Fund.
Although FPME has dissolved, its programs and goals, which date back to the 1950s, continue on in the APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Fund. The scholarship endowments were originally established in the 1990s through named endowments set up by numerous dedicated APMA member physicians and corporate partners. In 2007, the Foundation launched its first giving campaign since it assumed responsibilities for the scholarship program.
