Dr. Marvin and Ruth Steinberg Memorial Scholarship awarded to five podiatric medicine students at Barry University

Miami Shores, Fla. – Five students from Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine are awarded with the Dr. Marvin and Ruth Steinberg Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year. Sarah Haller, Sofie Pinney, Jessica Ortega, Jurgen Helmut Fernandez and Armando Gonzalez will each receive a $1,000 scholarship used toward their tuition. All students were selected based upon their leadership qualities and academic merit.
Haller, class of 2013, serves as current president of Florida Podiatric Medical Student Association (FPMSA). She was recently awarded the Dr. Harvey Kopelman Award for leadership and dedication to the profession. Pinney, a former FPMSA president and a member of the class of 2012 has also served as chair of the 20th Annual Agnes Seminar. Ortega holds the position of FPMA liaison for community service and is the 2011 winner of the Dr. Patricia Kopenhaver Scholarship. Helmut Fernandez is the current president of the Hispanic Podiatric Medical Students Association (HPMSA). Gonzalez is the president of the class of 2014 and serves as the historian for the HPMSA.
The Dr. Marvin and Ruth Steinberg Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994 by the Steinberg family as a memorial to Dr. Marvin Steinberg known as the “Father of Modern Podiatric Medicine” to help academically qualified and deserving students with their educational expenses at the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine.
Dr. Steinberg established and directed the first Podiatric Hospital Residency Program in a joint commission accredited hospital in 1965. Upon his retirement he became actively involved in the academic and clinical programs at Barry.
