School of Social Work hosts Social Action and Advocacy DayNov 18, 2011
MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Over 170 Barry University students attended a social action and advocacy day hosted by Barry’s School of Social Work on November 8, 2011. The event exposed Barry’s social work students to presentations by social advocacy groups and experienced social workers, in addition to a job fair that gathered social service agencies from around the state. The event was highlighted by a special presentation form Florida State Representative for district 108, Daphne Campbell. A nurse by trade, Campbell discussed the importance of social action and becoming involved in community service. The feature moment of Campbell’s speech occurred as she invited the entire audience on stage and led them in a chant, “I am a social worker, I can make a difference.” “She was incredible,” Maria Teahan, MSW Program Director, said. “She is so supportive of social work and the role of the social worker with today’s critical issues.” Aside from Representative Campbell, other presentations included Direct Action and Research Training Center (DART), Miami Coalition for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, the Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. Barry student Ronae Campbell made a special presentation with the assistance of Dr. Mitch Rosenwald, associate professor of social work. Campbell, who is currently earning her MSW in social work at Barry, presented her up-start non-profit organization, Glory Temple Ministries, which raises food for the hungry. “Our school’s commitment is founded on the Adrian Dominical principles of social justice and service to one’s community which is a seamless blend with the values and principles in the Social Work Code of ethics,” Teahan said. “We want our students to be proud of their profession’s heritage of over 150 years of working towards social action and advocating on behalf of vulnerable populations.”
