MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--On November 18 and 19, Barry University Senior Director of Graduate Admissions Dave Fletcher participated in the Southern Most HIV/AIDS (SMART) Ride #8. The 165 mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West looked to raise money for six HIV/AIDS support agencies in Florida.

Fletcher joined over 300 riders and more than 200 crew support members to raise more than $675,000 for the agencies. A unique aspect of the SMART Ride is that 100% of the money raised goes directly to the benefitting agencies with none being used for overhead cost.

This was Fletcher’s eighth year participating in the ride. “This year I raised more than $5000,” Fletcher said. “In the last 11 years, participating in this and similar rides to fund HIV/AIDS agencies, I have raised over $45,000.”

Carol Clothier, asst. dean in the College of Arts & Sciences and Lucy G. Virgo, program director at The Center for Positive Connections and a MSW student in Barry’s School of Social Work, also participated in the SMART Ride. Clothier volunteered as a crew member for the sixth year and Virgo for the third-straight year.

The Center for Positive Connections is one of the agencies that benefits from the SMART Ride. With the help of the donations, The Center for Positive Connections is able to provide educational, emotional, holistic and social support to 500 clients in Miami-Dade county infected and affected by chronic illness, with a special emphasis on the HIV/AIDS community.
