Research center celebrates grand opening with distinguished lecturer Dr. Kanat at Barry University

Miami Shores, Fla. – Barry University’s Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center hosts its grand opening Thursday, April 26 at its main campus. The research center was dedicated last year, when 92-year-old medical pioneer Dr. Margaret Brand was honored. Brand recounted memories she and late husband, Dr. Paul Brand, shared from the more than four decades when they treated countless leprosy patients from Vellore, India to Carville, Louisiana. In the last year the Brand Research Center was transformed into a fully equipped, high tech research laboratory.

To help celebrate the grand opening, Dr. Irvin Kanat will deliver an address as part of the Distinguished Lecture on Podiatric Medicine: A Personal Perspective. Kanat will present his lecture at 6 p.m. on April 26 at the Broad Center for the Performing Arts.

The establishment of the Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center has continued the Brands’ legacy by the development of research clinical trials, under the leadership of Dr. Robert Snyder, clinical research director, on reducing diabetic complications including ulcers and amputations. In addition, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, dean and professor of podiatric medicine and surgery and Dr. Gerhild Packert, basic science research director are collaborating on a $1.9 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, which is studying if nitric oxide can safely penetrate tissues and eradicate bacteria to benefit soldiers wounded in the field.

Kanat, past president of the American Podiatric Medical Association, was the original founder of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is one of the most renowned and accomplished podiatric physicians in the country. A graduate of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Kanat has participated in the podiatric/medical and surgical training of more than 400 podiatric residents while serving as director of podiatric education at Kern Hospital in Detroit.
