Barry University receives state approval to begin offering Emergency Medical Technology Certificate Program

Miami Shores, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has given final approval to Barry University to begin offering a certificate program in Emergency Medical Technology. The new program, scheduled to begin in August, will be offered through Barry’s School of Adult and Continuing Education and will give prospective students the opportunity to earn a certificate as an emergency medical technician (EMT). Barry is the only university in South Florida to offer the program.

With this approval, Barry is certified by the state as an initial training center for EMT’s. Each EMT class offered at Barry will consists of four months of training and three core components: classroom time, skills laboratory time and ambulance/hospital emergency room time. While the EMT Certificate Program does not earn college credit, it does provide potential students the necessary tools and training to pursue a career in such areas as fire rescue, ambulance, and emergency room/trauma positions. All classes for the initial August program will be offered in the evening at Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores. Skills lab and externship hours will be flexible and class size will be limited. Barry has already reached agreements with various ambulance services in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to offer field instruction to students.

Under the guidelines of Barry’s EMT Program, students will be required to pass all classes and exams in order to sit for the state exam, which must be done within 12 months of completing the course at Barry. This program will extend high quality and effective education and training essential to EMT’s. Students will have access to a dedicated skills lab on campus as well as career counseling. Numerous experts in the EMT field will also be brought in to provide quality and effective training for the program.
