Barry students to deliver Thanksgiving baskets to homebound seniors citizens tomorrow [Saturday, Nov. 17] in North Miami.
Every year students in Barry University’s School of Social Work organize Thanksgiving baskets to deliver to over 40 homebound senior citizens in the surrounding North Miami community.
Unlike other collections or drives, however, these 30 students take the project from step one to finish – raising all the necessary funds, shopping for Thanksgiving items, building the baskets and then hand-delivering them to these seniors. This year, they raised more than any previous year, collecting over $3,100 through bake sales and soliciting donations. This money was then used to purchase Thanksgiving food items for the baskets, as well as home goods for the seniors to use throughout the year. Tomorrow [Saturday, Nov. 17] they will be delivering these baskets to seniors throughout North Miami. One good photo opportunity will be their delivery at the Walden Pond Apartments, expected to be between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m. (Students will be meeting at Barry’s main campus in Miami Shores at 10:30 and driving directly to the apartment complex). Seven homebound senior citizens living in the complex will be receiving the baskets, and have already given permission to be photographed for the event. I’ve included directions to the Walden Pond Apartments below. All 40-plus seniors receiving baskets were selected by the North Miami Foundation for Seniors, which has collaborated with the School of Social Work to organize this event for several years. Each student involved in the project is studying towards a degree in social work, and using this community service as experience towards this degree. Please let me know if you plan on covering the delivery. Otherwise, for more information, your on-site media contact will be the Bachelor of Social Work program director, Michael Dentato at (305) 494-1936.
