Barry University appoints Dr. Karen A. Callaghan as dean of College of Arts and Sciences
 
MIAMI SHORES, Florida — Barry University has appointed Dr. Karen A. Callaghan as dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, announced Barry President Sister Linda Bevilacqua. Callaghan’s new role is effective immediately.

Callaghan has served on the Barry faculty for 19 years, beginning her career as assistant professor of Sociology, and most recently served as interim dean for the School of Arts and Sciences. During her 19 years of service at Barry, Callaghan was a professor of Sociology, served as department chair of Sociology and Criminology, and was associate dean for the School of Arts and Sciences.

“I am very honored to accept the position as Barry’s dean of the College of Arts and Sciences,” Callaghan said. “I look forward to continue working closely with faculty, staff, and students as we move forward with a strategic agenda for strengthening the liberal arts and sciences and for expanding our community service projects.”

Callaghan received her PhD in sociology from The Ohio State University, a M.A. in sociology from The Ohio State University, and a bachelors of arts in sociology and psychology from La Salle College in Philadelphia. She is a recipient of the Who’s Who Among American Teachers, which honors educators nominated by students from Who’s Who Among American Students and she is also the recipient of, Outstanding Young Women of America.

A resident of Coral Gables, Florida, Callaghan is the co-author and editor of two books The Politics of Culture: Race, Violence, and Democracy and Ideals of Feminine Beauty, Philosophical, Social, and Cultural Dimensions.
