Barry University professor receives Jean Wilkowski Fellowship award

MIAMI SHORES, Florida — Barry University professor Dr. Dan Ewing, Professor of Art History has been awarded the 2008 Ambassador Jean Wilkowski Fellowship award. The Wilkowski award will help pay for Ewing’s European research and travel during the month of April.

The Ambassador Jean Wilkowski International Fellowship award was established at Barry University in January 2001, and is given once a year to a single faculty member that provides support for full-time faculty conducting research or performing service abroad. It stipulates that the university community benefit from the international experiences of recipients.

Ewing will travel to London, Ghent, Brauweiler, The Hague, and should time allow Amsterdam; where he will engage in research that will lead to a monograph entitled The Art of Flemish Painter Jan de Beer (c.1475- c.1528) in Relation to Early Modern Antwerp: A Monograph with Oeuvre Catalogue. It will be the first monograph on this major Antwerp artist and will revise and enlarge our understanding of the Antwerp School at a key juncture in its early development.

During Ewing’s stay in Europe, which begins March 30 and ends May 3, will consist of three parts: re-visiting key works by the artist to study them anew, after years without seeing them; looking for answers to specific questions and details in the artist's life, in the 16th-century unpublished documents in archives in Antwerp and Ghent; and going through photo collections of art works, many unpublished, in research photo archives in London, Cologne, The Hague, and possibly Amsterdam.

Ewing began working on Jan de Beer 32 years ago as a graduate student writing a dissertation. After publishing several articles on De Beer in the 1980s, he switched to other research areas and it is only in the last five years that he has returned again to his thesis subject.

Ewing has been collecting research for his book that he hopes to have completed by the end of the year. His book will actually be published in 2010 or 2011 after it is has been peer reviewed, by two or more specialists in the field, who prepare their reports for the publisher.
