Miss USA contender with South Florida connection
Recent Barry University graduate, Amy Diaz, to compete as Miss Rhode Island this weekend

Miami Shores, Fla. – Amy Diaz, a recent graduate of Barry University, will compete in the Miss USA pageant this Friday, April 11. Diaz will represent her home state of Rhode Island at the competition, which will be held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. It is the second title Diaz has held for the state – she also won Miss Rhode Island Teen USA in 2001.

Diaz graduated from Barry in May 2007, and holds several degrees from the university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 2005 in broadcast communication, and then continued her education at Barry, graduating last year with dual master’s degrees in business administration and sports management.

As a Miss U.S.A. contender, Diaz lists these degrees as her proudest personal accomplishment, stating:
“I completed my undergraduate degree at 19 years old. I went on to complete two master’s degrees by the age of 22. I am especially proud that throughout my academic achievements not only was I continuously employed, but I was also exceptionally involved as a student leader at Barry University.”

In addition to earning her academic degrees from Barry, as she stated, Diaz was also a recognized student leader on campus. She is the founding president of Barry’s chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority and the recipient of several leadership awards including Graduate Assistant of the Year, Greek Organization President of the Year, Residential Life Hall Staff of the Year and National Broadcasting Society Outstanding Member of the Year.

“We in the Barry community are extremely proud of Amy’s accomplishments,” said Dr. Michael Griffin, vice president for Student Affairs. “She is a true example of something we try to instill in all our students – a commitment to excellence in their communities beyond graduation. We are proud to have her represent our Barry alumni in this way.”

Since her Barry graduation, Diaz has worked as the first personal assistant to tennis champion Venus Williams, and now works as an intern at the Rhode Island Supreme Court. She plans on using this experience towards a future career as an attorney in sport and entertainment law. Diaz currently resides in Johnston, R.I.
