Barry University students to compete at research poster competition in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
MIAMI SHORES, Florida — Two Barry University students have received an invitation to compete in a research poster competition that will take place Nov. 9-10 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Emir Rubi and Joao Luna joined Dr. Zuzana Zajickova for a 10 week summer research experience during the months of June – August 2008 at the Molecular Foundry user facility, a part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, CA.
The students’ research experience was stemmed by a National Science Foundation grant by the Department of Energy that was awarded to Zajickova in February 2008, which allowed for three Barry undergraduate research students to assist with her research.
The two students submitted their research findings to the Science and Energy Research Challenge (SEARCH) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Both Rubi and Luna had their posters selected for this national undergraduate research competition that will take place on Nov. 9-10 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Both students designed their own posters, which summarize their up to date research accomplishments.
Rubi’s poster is titled “Synthesis of Porous Alumina Monoliths for Applications in Microscale Liquid Chromatography” and Luna’s is titled “Photochemical Modification of Silica-Based Monoliths with Nanolayer of Fluorinated Methacrylate.”
Luna’s poster shows research results related to preparation and characterization of a polymer modified silica monoliths, while Rubi’s poster shows work related to alumina based monoliths. Monoliths allow for fast and efficient separation of chemical and biological compounds in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine, and environmental sciences.
The award from the SEARCH program provides full travel funding for the students and their faculty advisors. In addition to the competition, there will be opportunities for the students and their faculty advisors to meet with various Department of Energy program directors and learn about additional research and funding opportunities.
