Social work professionals gather to discuss and call for social justice

Under this historic economic crisis, many in our nation – both citizens and politicians – have been recognizing a significant opportunity for social justice and change. In particular, social workers, and those in the helping professions are finding themselves increasingly challenged as they encounter the impact that this crisis has on their clients.
With this in mind, Barry University’s School of Social Work is bringing together interdisciplinary professionals throughout South Florida this Friday, March 13 to discuss putting social justice into action, and how their professional call for justice can be heard by those in decision-making positions.
More than 200 are expected for the school’s 16th annual professional conference, “And Justice for All: Challenges and Opportunities in Professional Practice.” The all-day event will bring together helping professionals (social workers and administrators, marriage and family therapists and mental health professionals) to discuss a broad spectrum of issues, all related to social justice. Workshop topics will include justice for veterans, advocating for youth in foster care, oppression in farmworker communities, working with older persons and sexual violence against women.
The day opens with a keynote address at 9:30 a.m. Dr. Janet L. Finn, author of “Just Practice: A Social Justice Approach to Social Work,” will address participants on the way social justice issues reveal themselves in many practices and professions, and how to ensure “love” and “justice” for all individual, family, community or organization clients.
After workshops throughout the day, the conference will close at 4 p.m. with a discussion of public policy and social justice advocacy led by Johanna Byrd, director of government affairs for the Florida National Association of Social Workers (NASW). During this conclusion, participants will learn tools and techniques for effectively making an impact on public policy.
The keynote address and conference conclusion will take place in Andreas 112. I’ve included directions below. FROM THE NORTH: Take I-95 south to NW 125 Street. Turn left (east) at the light onto NW 125 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue. The Landon Student Union is on the southwest corner of North Miami Avenue and NW 115th Street. Visitor parking is available on the south side of the building.
FROM THE SOUTH: Take I-95 north to NW 119 Street. Turn right (east) at the light onto NW 119 Street. Turn right (south) onto North Miami Avenue.
