In an effort to foster global awareness and an appreciation for diverse cultures, Barry University’s International and Multicultural Programs will host International Education Week on the university’s Miami Shores campus from Monday, Nov. 16, through Friday, Nov. 20. Barry will celebrate its international community with a variety of programs creating cultural awareness and stimulating open dialogue, including a Latino photo exhibit on Monday and a live musical performance highlighting Asian American issues on Thursday. On Monday, “Latinos in Barry: The Unveiling of an Identity of One Name and Many Voices” will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Barry’s Landon Student Union and will feature an unveiling of 11-by-14 portrait photos of Latino Barry students that will remain on display throughout the week. During the event, co-sponsored by the Latin American Student Association, Barry students will reveal their headshots, taken by student photographer Michelle Webster, and will discuss how their Latino roots play a role in their identities. In addition, featured students will write a caption to accompany their photos describing what it means to them to be Latino. On Thursday, “Smashing the Ceiling and Redefinition of Identity” will put the spotlight on Asian Americans with a live musical performance by internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter Magdalen Hsu-Li from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 103 of the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library. The live performance will feature lyrics and dialogue centered on identity, diversity, racism, women’s issues and other topics concerning the Asian American culture. The photo exhibit and the live musical performance are two of several events that will be taking place on campus in commemoration of International Education Week and following this year’s theme of “International Education: Improving Student Achievement around the World.” For more information about International Education Week, visit http://iew.state.gov/index.cfm.
