MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pounded out 20 hits to run up a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst on Thursday night at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs took game one 5-0 and the nightcap 4-2.

Barry (11-5) did all of its damage in the first game in the first inning off Laker starter Megan Hopton (4-3). The Bucs loaded the bases on singles by Natalia Ojeda, Sarah Broeseker and Paula Mackin with two outs. Ashley Fernandez delivered two runs with a single up the middle and Kelly Martinez followed with a two-run double to the gap in left-center. Martinez swiped third and came home when no one covered third and Taylor Jezuit’s throw went down the line in left.

Alexi s Yohe (4-2) made the runs stand up, scattering four hits in a complete-game shutout. She walked three and struck out three. Hopton took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk in two innings.

In the second game, Barry scored three runs in the third inning to break open a 1-1 game. The Bucs jumped out in front in the second inning as pinch runner Christal Cruz trotted home on a groundball to short by Megan Copeland.

The Lakers (5-7) knotted the game at 1-1 in the third, as Kayliegh Milliman raced home on an error.

In the bottom of the third, Martinez came through again with a two-run double. She scored on a single by pitcher Camille Czarnecki (5-2) to make it 4-1. The Lakers added a late run in the seventh on an RBI single by Courtney Smith, who went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader.

Czarnecki went the distance, holding the Lakers to two runs (one earned) on four hits. She walked four and struck out two. Annie Truelove (1-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks.

Martinez led the Bucs at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI. She also swiped two bases and scored twice. Julie Brito and Ojeda also collected three hits each, while Fernandez had two RBI.
