Buccaneer National Champions Receive Rings

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers honored two NCAA Division II team champions and one individual champion at a ring ceremony on Thursday.

The Buccaneer men’s tennis and men’s golf teams as well as Nancy Vergara from the women’s golf team all won national titles last spring. The teams and Vergara received rings and scrapbooks, enjoyed a video recap of the championships and receive congratulations from their coach, the athletic department and the University administration.

For men’s tennis, it was their second title in four years. They became the first Buccaneer team in history to post an unblemished record, going 29-0 to claim the title by beating the defending champs Armstrong Atlantic 5-4 in the finals.

The men’s golf team waded through a sea of conference foes to claim the 2013 title, their second since 2007. The Bucs placed second in stroke play and then defeated Missouri-St. Louis, Nova Southeastern and Lynn in match play for the title. Against Sunshine State Conference foes Nova Southeastern and Lynn, the Bucs won thanks to the cumulative score tie break procedure, besting the Sharks by three strokes and the Knights by four.

Vergara became the first individual NCAA champion in the program’s history. The won the title on the final round with a six-foot par putt, while the runner up from Nova Southeastern bogeyed.
