Recently appointed as the Dean of Academic Studies at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), the excitement still exudes from Barry University alumna Pleshette McPhee. Always impeccably dressed and articulate, the refined woman has an air of confidence she brings to her new position.
McPhee has made tremendous inroads since joining BTVI in August 2012. Initially, hired as an English instructor, she was appointed as head of Department for English in January 2014. Less than a year later, she holds a senior management position, assuming responsibility for the academic affairs of all disciplines.
As a 21st century leader, the Barry alumna is constantly thinking of how best to execute her duties.
“I believe in being innovative, on the cutting edge, the kind of leader that leads by example,” said the veteran educator who is also giving back to her alma mater as Vice President of the Barry Bahamas Alumni Chapter.
“I have a desire to train instructors, creating a community where we collaborate and develop professionally. I encourage this in order for our institution to grow,” said McPhee.
Certainly, it’s the dawning of a new day for McPhee, who has the ability to get things done. As the consummate professional, perhaps this is a reality because she is a leader of inclusion. She often quotes a poignant statement by leadership expert, John Maxwell: “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
I lead with a level of fairness but yet I lead in love,” said McPhee. “I’m about building relationships and empowering people. As a leader, I believe in being honest and upright.”
Questioned as to what she feels prepared her for the position, McPhee pointed to her training and experience in the classroom for 26 years. In addition, her credentials include a Bachelor’s of Education in general education from The College of The Bahamas and a Master’s of Science in curriculum and instruction from Barry University.
She also credited being mentored by Bahamas Ministry of Education’s former Permanent Secretary, Elma Garraway and Barry’s Associate Dean, Jill Farrell, PhD. Moreover, she acknowledged her relationship with God.
“Jesus Christ is the Master teacher. This position was in His plans and this path He has set for me,” she noted.
Meanwhile, there is no doubt why McPhee was handpicked for her post. Firstly, she is professional, coupled with the fact that she is passionate about education.
“I live by the principle of being a lifelong learner. Every day, I want to learn something new. It is important to be in the know about your craft and what is happening around you,” stated McPhee.
And there is no doubt that in her new position at BTVI, McPhee brings a level of confidence, experience, professionalism, and grace that when combined, aids in her ability to effectively run the office of Dean of Academic Studies.
