Barry University professor of biology Jeremy Montague was recently elected president of the Florida Academy of Sciences (FAS). Montague was elected by the members of the FAS and his term will run until March 2017. As president of the FAS, Montague’s primary responsibilities include planning the annual meeting, and managing both the annual budget and the FAS endowment.
Montague has been actively involved in the FAS since joining in 1987. In 1998, he served as the Chair for the biological sciences section of the FAS annual meeting. From 2003-2012, Montague served as the FAS Program Chair, coordinating each annual meeting while editing the program abstracts. In 2010, he began a five-year term as secretary of the FAS. Montague joined the FAS in 1987.
The Florida Academy of Sciences, Inc. was founded in 1936 as a non-profit organization. The Academy is the Florida affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is the only organization in Florida that represents all disciplines of sciences. The Florida Academy of Sciences, Inc. sponsors the Florida Junior Academy of Science to encourage young scientists, publishes the Florida Scientist, a quarterly journal distributed to its members and libraries worldwide, and sponsors an annual meeting to give members opportunity to present papers, honor their peers, and participate in multidisciplinary scientific exchanges.
Montague has been with Barry University since 1983. He has authored or co-authored 33 peer-reviewed articles in professional journals, focusing mainly on statistical work in terrestrial ecology, marine biology, cell biology, and educational program assessment. Montague earned his B.S. cum laude at SUNY College at Geneseo, an M.S. at Kent State University, and his Ph.D. at Syracuse University.
