Tomorrow! The Department of English and Foreign Languages Presents A Lecture Series on Exile

The Department of English and Foreign Languages will be hosting a series of lectures on the topic of exile in different nations and periods in history. The series will take place throughout November 2019, with one conference per week. 

Exodo venezolano: Huir de la represión y la miseria 

Sonia Osorio, a journalist, and editor at El Nuevo Herald will be talking about the Venezuelan exile that is still going on today. Osorio is a renowned journalist in South Florida who specializes in local and Latin American issues. She has covered a wide range of topics from the Elián González saga, September 11thterrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, to the immigration crisis in Venezuela, among other news. In 2019, she was a recipient of the Sunshine Florida Awards in research journalism for her research: Emigrar a la muerte: Venezolanas asesinadas en Latinoamérica. Her lecture, entitled “Exodo venezolano: Huir de la represión y la miseria”, will be delivered in Spanish with a Q&A session in both English and Spanish.

The Impact of Cuban Exile Musicians in the United States

Fernando “Fernán” Hernández is a historian and author of a collection of books on Cuban identity in the US. He is also one of the 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children who left their homeland with “Operation Pedro Pan”, what became the largest recorded unaccompanied child refugee exodus in the Western Hemisphere. He was the Business Program Chair at Everest Institute and taught at Carlos Albizu University and CBT College. He is the author of many books about Cuban history and culture, includingThe Cubans: Our Legacy in the United States: A Collective Biography and Cuba and the USA: A Musical Journey. His lecture, entitled “The Impact of Cuban Exile Musicians in the United States”, will be delivered in English with a Q&A session in both English and Spanish.

León Felipe: poeta del exilio, la risa y el llanto

Beatriz Calvo-Peña is an assistant professor of Spanish at Barry University. She has worked in several universities across the United States and Spain, where she has taught courses on language, literature, and journalism. She has lectured extensively on Spanish and Latin American culture and women studies and has published articles on a broad spectrum of subjects including immigration, diaspora, and social media activism. She has been awarded grants and academic awards from renowned institutions, including the Florida Humanities Council. She is also the author of two books: Buena Vista Social Blog: Internet and Freedom of Expression in Cuba and Tetuán. Her lecture, entitled “León Felipe: poeta del exilio, la risa y el llanto”, will be delivered in Spanish with a Q&A session in both English and Spanish.
