Sigma Tau Delta and English Department Writing Contest Winners Announced

Barry’s International English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, and the English Department announced the winners of its 2019-20 writing contest as judged by English honors student Johania Charles and professor Dr. Lillian Schanfield. This campus-wide annual writing contest was launched in the early 1980s by Dr. Schanfield. When Sigma Tau Delta was chartered in 1991, the contest became one of the chapter’s regular activities. Student members in the society pledge to act as jurors when they are inducted. Student judge Johania is an esteemed Sigma Tau Delta member and English Literature major who is committed to the Barry mission.

Emely Centeno won first place in poetry and received an honorable mention for flash fiction, while Shomari Harris was awarded first place in the essay portion. First place winners are recognized in a variety of ways, including with a monetary prize and by having their work published in the chapter's literary journal, What Oft Was Thought.
