MIAMI (Jan. 9, 2017) — Approximately 125 Barry University students, faculty and staff will volunteer their time to the community this Saturday, Jan. 14, as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Spearheaded by the University’s Center for Community Services Initiatives, students, faculty and staff will spend time cleaning up beaches, painting, landscaping, planting community gardens and more. Barry is primarily partnering with Gang Alternative and Urban GreenWorks on the service projects.
The community service projects will place from 9:30 a.m. – noon at the following locations:
- Virginia Key Beach Park (4020 Virginia Beach Drive, Miami): Various ecological restoration projects
- Little Haiti Optimist Club (Soar Park Teen Center, 120 NW 83rd St., Miami): Community garden beautification and restoration
- Griffing Park (near 340 NE 123rd St., North Miami): Community garden restoration projects
- Lillie C. Evans K-8 Center (1895 NW 75th St., Miami): School beautification projects
- Urban GreenWorks Cerasee Farm (1590 NW 54th St., Miami): Crop rotation and garden bed maintenance
- Urban GreenWorks (514 NE 62nd St., Miami): Community garden development and planting
Each year, the Barry University community devotes thousands of hours to various community service projects. In 2016, students, faculty and staff logged more than 60,000 service hours. Barry University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll every year since 2012.
