MIAMI SHORES -- Savad Garner was speaking for his team when he said the Buccaneers' next opponent is nothing to take lightly.

Barry University hosts Ave Maria at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Health & Sports Center. The Bucs are riding a five-game winning streak to begin the season. But the Gyrenes, who enter with a 5-4 overall mark are coming off one of their most impressive performances in school history.

Ave Maria beat Florida National 110-82 Tuesday, which set a Gyrenes' school record for the most points scored at home. Ave Maria, which is located in Ave Maria, Fla., east of Naples. Matt Chattin scored a career-high 41 points in that win. Wendell Powell set career-bests in points (29) and rebounds (13).

"We can't take anything for granted because they beat Florida National by 20," Garner said.

If Tuesday is any indication, the Bucs will have to buckle down defensively. Barry's best game defensively came a month ago when the Buccaneers held Florida Memorial to 51 points. Every other opponent has scored at least 20 points more, however.

"That's one thing we have been working on recently, a lot of defensive transition and things like that, learning how to get back," Garner said. "We're getting a lot better stopping the ball. Our defense is getting there. We're ready for it."

Time will tell. The Buccaneers have allowed two teams to score over 85 points. But the Bucs have been outrebounding teams by nearly 14 boards per game. Both Yunio Barrueta and Magne Fivelstad have set career-highs in rebounds this year.

Of course, the schedule begins to toughen up now, and the Bucs will have to be at their best to continue to win.

"We've got to continue to work hard, practice like we're 5-0," Garner said. "We like being 5-0, but in reality, are we really going to stay undefeated? We just got to keep working hard."
