Former Barry University men’s basketball player Aaron Martin is beginning his professional career in Bolivia.

Martin, a 6-6 forward who spent the 2012-13 season with the Buccaneers, landed a spot on the Universidad Mayor de San Andres Bolmar club in the Bolivian Basketball League. He debuted in the BBL Libabol tournament in October.

Martin averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, while starting eight of the 27 games he appeared in for the Bucs. He shot 34.4 percent from three-point range, and his 251 points that season was third most on the team. Martin led Barry in free throw shooting at 78.2 percent.

He scored a season-high 21 points in an overtime win over Florida Tech on Jan. 2, 2013. Martin had 20 points against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Nov. 19, 2012. He scored 15 points at Florida Southern on Jan. 5, 2013. He led the Bucs in scoring in six games, reaching double figures in all of them.

“We’re happy for Aaron that he earned a chance to continue playing basketball at the next level,” Bucs assistant coach Ryan Saunders said. “He’s a good perimeter shooter and a great guy to have on a roster. We look forward to keeping tabs on him as he begins his professional career.”

A Capitol Heights, Md., product, Martin transferred to Barry after one season at NCAA Division I South Carolina State, where he averaged 5.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as a junior.
