WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers out-dueled the Cornerstone Golden Eagles 48-46 in the Northwood Hyatt New Year’s Classic on Wednesday at the de Hoernle Center.

The first half was an affair of swings. The Buccaneers (8-3) grabbed a quick 7-2 lead only to see the Eagles (9-6) respond with an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 lead on a Jill Steenwyk three-pointer with 14:24 to play. The teams traded baskets for the next ten minutes until a layup by Cornerstone’s Ashley Niedermayer tied the game at 21-21 with 5:35 remaining in the half. Barry scored the last eight points, however to carry a 30-21 lead into the break.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 31-30 on a pair of Tanner Hostetler free throws with 15:50 to play. After the teams traded several baskets and the lead, the Bucs built a six-point advantage on a three-pointer by Nyjah Porcher at the 4:13 mark. Leading 48-42, the Bucs would not score again, but the Eagles only managed four points themselves and the Bucs escaped with a 48-46 win.

Kaylia Richardson played her best game of the season for the Bucs, hitting 7-of-9 from the field and leading the team+ with 15 points. Porcher chipped in 11. Jill Hendrickson led Cornerstone with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Steenwyk added 11 points, while Niedermayer had 11 boards.

The Eagles, led by Hendrickson and Niedermayer, held a commanding 45-27 edge on the glass, but the Buccaneers countered by only turning the ball over eight times, including just two in the second half, while forcing 16 Eagle turnovers. Ashley Lutz had six steals for Barry.

The Bucs jump into the heart of Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 3 when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to face the Florida Southern Lady Mocs at 5:30 pm in Jenkins Field house.
