GOLDEN, Colo. – The Barry University women’s soccer team were determined to leave Colorado with a win—and they did just that. The Bucs (1-1-0) recorded their first win of the 2007 season against the Colorado School of Mines Ore Diggers on Sunday morning at Brook’s Field.
Barry started out strong in the first period as freshman Emily Bourgoine scored her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Steph Day just under the first ten minutes of the game. Junior Elanna Brady won the ball which she took down the sideline and played to Day who dribbled past an Ore Digger defender. Taking it to the end line, Day played a driven ball across the face of the goal to awaiting Bourgoine.
At the 66th minute, Colorado Mines made a run down the left hand side when Nikki Day stepped in for a slide tackle, but was called for a foul inside the 18. Kayla Mitchell took the penalty kick for the Ore Diggers to tie the game 1-1.
With only a few minutes left in the game, Maya Ozery drove in for the goal but was fouled in the box. With the pressure on, Brady stepped up to take the penalty kick and skillfully drove the ball into the right corner of the goal for the game-winner, 2-1.
Barry will head home to host Georgia Southwestern at Buccaneer Field on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 pm.
