BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite junior Camilla Pagnan recording a match-high 37 kills, the Barry University volleyball team (6-8, 0-1 SSC) dropped their Sunshine State Conference opener 3-2 to the Lynn Fighting Knights on Friday night. The game scores were 30-26, 30-28, 22-30, 21-30, and 15-12.
 
Lynn (9-3, 1-1 SSC) jumped out to an early lead winning the first two games 30-26 and 30-28. However, they nearly let the second set slip away when Barry went on a 6-1 scoring run. Down 28-22, Lauren Evans served four consecutive points to pull the Bucs to within one, 29-28. Lacy Redwine, however, closed out the game with a kill.
 
After an extended intermission between the second and third games, the Buccaneers fired out of the locker room determine to make a statement and Buccaneer head coach Dave Nichols found the right mix to make it happen. After taking the lead 6-5 in game three, Barry rolled to a 30-22 win.
 
In the fourth set, Barry continued to dominate the fourth set in much the same way as the third. Leading 18-10, Barry suffered a devastating blow when Spenser Rigg went out with a severe ankle sprain. With missing defensive key, the Fighting Knights mounted a comeback and pulled to within one point 21-20. But Barry closed out the fourth with a run of their own to even the match at two games apiece.
 
The loss of Rigg proved to be detrimental for the Bucs as the Knights outscored the Bucs 15-12 to earn the win.
 
For the second time this season, Pagnan recorded 37 kills to lead all attackers and hit a .387 clip, while adding nine digs. Caitlin Shawver added 11 kills and hit a blistering .421 clip, while Evans collected 24 digs. Maria Romanowski recorded a double-double with 64 assists and 12 digs.
 
Irmina Zamara hit .414 in the match with 14 kills to lead Lynn, while Daris Rodriguez added 13 kills on a .344 clip and Camila Lins recorded 12 kills and 16 digs. Christie Schade led the Knights with 20 digs.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Sept 22 hosting Nova Southeastern at the Health & Sports Center at 4 pm.
