Volleyball Sinks Tars for Second Straight SSC Win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – It took nearly two hours for the three-game match to end, but the Barry University volleyball team managed to pull out their second-straight Sunshine State Conference win, this time 3-0 over the Rollins College Tars (11-8, 2-3 SSC) at the Health & Sport Center. The Buccaneers won by scores of 34-32, 30-20, and 35-33.
 
In the first set, the lead exchanged hands nine times before Barry (8-10, 2-2 SSC) finally pulled out a 34-32 win. Neither team led by more than three points then entire way, but Buccaneer Camilla Pagnan recorded nine of her 25 kills in the first game to lead Barry to a one game advantage.
 
Pagnan added eight more kills in game two as Barry romped the Tars 30-20. Leading 11-10 in the set, the Buccaneers went on a 9-3 scoring run and then set the cruise control until the end of the game. Setter Maria Romanowski handed out 20 assists in the game and guided the Bucs to a blistering .415 team percentage.
 
In the final game, Rollins exploded out of the break and capitalized on several Buccaneer errors for an early 20-12 lead. However, the Bucs began chipping away at the Tar lead and eventually took match point 30-29. The Tars regained the lead 32-31, but after tying twice more, Barry managed to pull out the 35-33 win to take the match.
 
Pagan finished with a match-high 25 kills and hit a .310 clip to lead Barry. Stefanie Sveiven added 13 kills, will Caitlin Shawver and Meisje-Sabel Burton added 11 and 10 kills respectively. Lauren Evans collected 16 digs and Romanowski added 56 assists.
 
Christina Reinders led the Tars with 14 kills and Piper Young added 11. Kim Cline led Rollins with 10 digs, while Lacey Malarkey added 32 assists.
 
The Buccaneers will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 hosting the ninth-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins at the Health & Sports Center at 2 pm.
