LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry University men’s soccer team (5-5-1, 0-2-1 SSC) failed to grasp a conference win in a 4-3 loss to the Florida Southern Moccasins (4-5-0, 1-3-0 SSC) on Saturday evening at Barnett Field.

The Bucs held their defense in the first 30 minutes of the game until Garrett Gaa’s long pass to Daniel Heaney resulted in a first goal for Florida Southern’s Dennie Townsend. Five minutes later the Mocs were able to draw the Bucs’ keeper Gio Cobielles out of the box just in time for Sebastian Haupt to pass the ball up to Givi Kokaia for his first goal of the season to put the Bucs down 2-0.

Still the Bucs answered back four minutes later as Stephen Hume handled a long pass up to Vuk Kojic for his third goal on the season. But the Mocs weren’t satisfied with just a one goal lead and so again, they drew Bucs’ keeper Cobielles out of the box. When Cobielles went to clear the ball, Florida Southern’s Kokaia came up for the block and got around Cobielles to score and end the first period 3-1.

With just twenty minutes left in the game, Barry’s Bacheler Jean Pierre connected with senior Lee Yakubowich with a cross out of the right corner. Yakubowich headed the ball into the goal to put the Bucs closer to the Mocs, 3-2. But the Bucs weren’t going to let it go that easy as Kojic’s shot on goal was blocked, but he was able to gain the rebound and score to tie the game 3-3 with 13 minutes left on the clock.

The first over time gave Kojic numerous chances at scoring, but unfortunately none were advantageous. In the second over time, Buccaneer Pedro Petris took a great shot at goal but was saved by the Mocs’ keeper. With three minutes to go in the second over time, Buccaneer Stephen Hume was whistled inside the box for a handball which gave the Mocs’ a chance for a penalty kick. Ryan Wolfe converted the kick and won the game for the Mocs, 4-3.

The Buccaneers will travel to Lynn University on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 3:00pm.
