ST. LEO, Fla. – The Barry University volleyball team (8-13, 2-5 SSC) continued to struggle in Sunshine State Conference play falling 3-1 to the Saint Leo Lions on Sunday at the Bowman Center. The game scores were 30-22, 30-27, 28-30 and 30-17.
 
Despite recording 14 kills to Saint Leo’s 12 in the first game, the Lions (17-7, 3-4 SSC) collected seven team blocks at the net and hit a .296 clip for the 30-22 win. Buccaneer Camilla Pagnan led all attackers in the set with five kills, while SLU’s Jenna Jordan added four.
 
In game two, the Buccaneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. After trading the next 31 points and a strategic timeout by SLU head coach Sam Cibrone, the Lions managed to come back and take an 18-17 lead. Behind Saint Leo’s Jordan blazing .700 clip and eight kills the Lions held on to win 30-27 for the two-game advantage.
 
After the Bucs jumped out to a 14-9 lead in game three, the Lions came back and tied the frame, 21-21. Barry later took a four point lead, 28-24 until Saint Leo battled back to tie the game again at 28 all. However, the Buccaneers managed to take a game from SLU after a Stefanie Sveiven kill and a Saint Leo offensive miscue, 30-28.
 
With Barry up 10-8 in the final game, Saint Leo erupted with a 22-5 scoring run close out the set with a 30-17 win to take the match.
 
Pagnan collected eight digs to go along with her match-high 22 kills to lead Barry. Caitlin Shawver followed with 10 kills, while Julie Priester collected 11 digs.
 
Saint Leo’s Jordan led with 16 kills and a .351 hitting percentage, while teammate Kaitlin McKenna hit a blistering .667 clip with 13 kills. Leah Perry added 10 kills and Michelle Nogueras finished with a double-double, 48 assists and 12 digs.
 
The Buccaneers will return to the confines of the Health & Sport Center on Tuesday, Oct. 9 hosting the St. Thomas Bobcats at 7 pm.
