MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University women’s soccer team (6-8-0, 1-5-0 SSC) broke out of their slump with an incredible 3-1 victory over the Flagler College Saints (6-7-0) on Sunday evening at Buccaneer Field.

The aggression in the Buccaneers compared to their last game on Friday was apparently increased on the field as the Bucs maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the first half.

The Bucs took the lead at the 20:20 mark as Barry’s Damarys Mendez passed to captain Maya Ozery for a 25-yard shot into the back of the goal. The Saints were able to tie up the game just 16 minutes later when Flagler’s Kincaid Schmidt got a hold of a loose ball and broke away to Kaitlyn Mulberry for her first goal of the season.

Coming into the second period tied the intensity in the game picked up as fouls and yellow cards started to fly, including one to the Flagler bench. The Saints began outshooting the Bucs but it all changed when Buccaneer Elanna Brady took a shot on goal but was blocked. However, the Saints’ blocked ball just happened to land right on the toe of Buccaneer Steph Day who rolled it in just over the line for a goal to put the Bucs up 2-1 at the 75:17 minute mark.

Still, Barry wasn’t content with only a one goal lead.  Buccaneers Tiffany Rolfing and Day were able to break out and push the ball up the right side and cut in to awaiting senior Jena Cernuto for her first goal of the season which put the Bucs safely at 3-1 with less than ten minutes left in regulation.

Saints’ keeper Hope McArthur (6-7)  picked up her seventh loss while Buccaneer Kelly Tryson’s win put her back to an even 4-4 record. Buccaneer Mendez led the game with four shots and two on goal.

Barry will travel to Tampa to face the Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 20 for a game at 7:00 pm.
