MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Florida International Panthers defeated the Barry Buccaneers 61-44 in a women’s basketball exhibition game in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage in the first period, but the Bucs battled back to knot the game at 8-8 on a pair of free throws at the 11:01 mark of the half.

But coming out of the media timeout, the Panthers scored 10 unanswered points, five by LaQuetta Ferguson off the bench, to go up 18-10.

The Bucs answered back once more to close to 18-16 on a three-pointer by Alexandra Henri and traditional three-point play from Lucy Martinez. However the Panthers closed the frame on a 11-2 run to go into the half up 29-18.

In the second half, the Bucs hung close for the first five minutes. They cut the lead to 31-28 on a three-pointer by Martinez at 16:48 and trailed just 36-28 at 14:41. But over the next 10:32, the Panthers built a 55-37 margin behind 12 points from Iva Cigler, pushed the lead to 61-39 and finally settled for a 17-point win.

Barry’s Martinez led all scorers with 16 points, but was the only Buccaneer in double figures. Ferguson, a pre-season All-Sunbelt Conference pick, led the Panthers with 15 points, while Cigler added 14 and Elisa Carey had 11 points and 16 rebounds.

The Buccaneers open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 16 against Nova Southeastern at the NSU Tip-off Classic.
