MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers won for the eighth straight time to open the season, beating the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 64-50 in women’s basketball action from the Health & Sports Center on Monday night.
The Bucs (8-0) led 19-13 with 5:42 left in the first period, but closed the frame on a 10-4 run to take a 12-point lead at the half.
The Sailfish (1-8) managed to cut the lead under 10 points just twice in the second half at 48-40 and 50-42. But the Bucs pushed the lead to as many at 18 points at the 2:07 on a short jumper from Princess Bailey.
Bailey and Kia Palmer led the Bucs with 15 points, while Christina Thompson added 14 points and Lisa Fors had 10 in a balanced attack. Bailey also had eight rebounds help the Bucs post a 42-36 edge on the glass and Lucy Martinez had a career-high 10 assists.
For the Sailfish, Sitara Richard led the way with 14 points, while Ashley Adkins chipped in 12 and Brooke Burgess had a double –double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bucs now take 15 days off for exams and return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 18 against the Central Oklahoma Broncos as part of the Cruzin Classic.
