MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (2-2) split another pair of games on the second day of the third annual Barry/Nova Softball Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Buccaneers fell 1-0 to the 14th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (4-0), but defeated the Florida Tech Panthers 1-0 in the nightcap.
It took the Bucs eight innings to close the day out with the win over the Panthers (2-2), but managed to do it in exciting fashion in extra innings. Going by the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth, Ali Perantoni started the inning off at second base. From there it was textbook softball. Sara Hipson sacrificed Perantoni to third and Brittany Anderson drove in the game winning run with a one-out RBI single to left for the 1-0 win.
Amber Jack (1-0) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout and struck out eight, while allowing five hits in the win. Shyla Rider peppered the outfield going 3-for-3 with two singles and a double to lead the Bucs at the plate. Florida Tech’s Cat McDaniel (1-1) gave up one unearned run on five hits and struck out seven in the loss.
In the Bucs first game, both teams combined for six hits. Barry only managed two, but Alabama-Huntsville managed to capitalize on one of their four hits. In the bottom of the third, Amy Harris singled in the only run to give the Chargers the 1-0 win.
Barry’s Megan Young (1-2) allowed one run and struck out four in the loss, while Alex Lewis (2-0) tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out four for the Chargers to pick up the win.
Rider went 4-for-6 at the plate to lead Barry, while Ashley Likens went 2-for-6 on the day.
The Buccaneers will close out tournament play at the Barry/Nova Softball Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 3. Barry will face Eckerd at 1:30 pm followed by Nova Southeastern at 3:45 pm in non-conference action.
