MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers jumped out to a big lead and surfed to a 10-4 victory over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Saturday in a weather-shortened game at Feinbloom Field.

The Bucs (3-2) jumped out on top after just three pitches when shortstop Nick Shaw hit a lead-off homer, the first of his career.

The Bucs built an 8-1 lead after three innings. Chris Leon had two hits and a walk and scored three times, while Andrew Frezza added three hits and two runs as the top of the order combined to go seven-for-10 with seven runs.

The Crusaders (4-2), who led NCAA Division II in homers in 2007, connected for three long balls to trim into the Bucs’ lead. Seth Waller and Will Breslin connected on solo shots, while Carlso Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

As the Bucs prepared to take the field in the top of the eighth inning, lightning caused a stoppage of play and heavy rains flooded the field and made resumption impossible.

Ray Rhoads (2-0) who worked all seven innings, earned the win for the Bucs. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six.

Andy Helms (0-1) took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out five.

The schedule for Sunday’s games is not available at press time.
