PHOENIX, Ariz.—The Barry Buccaneers swatted the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets 8-3 at Rose Mofford Park in the 2008 NCAA Division II Lead Off Classic Thursday night.
Ashley Likens homered, doubled and drove in six runs, while Megan Young (2-2) added a solo homer and tossed a complete game to earn the win.
Likens broke open a scoreless game in the third inning, lacing a Rebekah Tsatsa (0-1) fastball over the fence in left field for a three-run homer.
With the Bucs up 4-1 in the fourth inning, Likens came to bat with the bases loaded and launched a double into the right-center field gap to make it 7-1.
Young’s blast, a towering shot to right field, capped the scoring for the Bucs (5-2).
The Yellowjackets (0-1) had a couple of infield hits in the seventh inning and took advantage of a bad-hop single that caught Likens in the mouth to score a pair of runs and trim the lead to the final margin.
Young gave up seven hits, but did not walk a batter, allowing three runs (two earned) and struck out five. Tsatsa worked 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk, while recordin one strikeout.
The Bucs face the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino on Friday before heading into bracket play.
