ST. LEO, Fla. – After two consecutive rainouts to start the 2008 season, the Barry University men’s tennis team (1-0, 1-0) blanked the Saint Leo Lions (0-4, 0-2 SSC) 9-0 in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Returners Andrew Sharnov and Manuel Lauter teamed together at the doubles second flight for an 8-1 win over Saint Leo’s Pablo Chavez and Ali El Naamani. The Buccaneers picked up two more wins in doubles with an 8-4 win at the top flight and an 8-6 win at the bottom flight.
In singles action, the Lions’ Saif Noorsumar retired after being down 6-0, 4-0 at #3 singles to give Lauter the win and Barry an early 4-0 lead. Newcomer Emmanuel Fraitzl picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Saint Leo’s Pablo Chavez at the top flight to secure the match, while Christoph Gayer cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the fourth flight over Naamani. After splitting sets at the bottom flight, Barry’s David Barragan won the super tiebreaker 10-5 over SLU’s Diego Timoteo to end the match.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 17 in St. Petersburg, Fla. taking on the Eckerd Tritons at 11 am.
