Women's Tennis Shuts Out Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Barry University women’s tennis team (2-0, 2-0 SSC) picked up their second straight Sunshine State Conference win by blanking the Eckerd Tritons (0-1, 0-1 SSC) 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Bullard Tennis Center.
 
Saskia Kruse and Laime Contreras teamed up at the doubles third flight to shutout Eckerd’s Rachel Chilton/Rachel Harbeitner tandem 8-0 to give Barry an early lead in the match. Angie Werschel and Olivia Lilien followed with an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot over Danielle Loizzo and Maria Flavia-Russo, while Caroline Stevens and Berit Peterson gave Barry a 3-0 lead in the match with an 8-4 win at the top flight.
 
In singles action, Contreras and Julie Cadet were superior at the bottom two singles flights picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins over Chilton and Harbeitner respectively. Peterson won No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Flavia-Russo while Lilien topped Loizzo 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Playing the top singles flight, Stevens managed to outlast Madora Mak 6-4, 7-6, while Barry’s 25th-ranked singles player defeated Mary-Charlotte Mak 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
 
The Buccaneers will continue action on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in West Palm Beach, Fla. with a 3 pm match against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish.
