DECATUR, Ala. – After having games cancelled due to inclement weather on the first day of the Charger Chillout, the Barry University softball team (11-2) picked up a pair of one-run wins to open tournament play on Saturday afternoon. The Buccaneers defeated West Florida (7-4) 2-1 and closed out the day with a 4-3, eight inning win over #14 Alabama-Huntsville.

Megan Young drove in five of the Bucs six runs and finished the day going 3-for-6 at the plate including a two-RBI double against the 14th-ranked Chargers. Cristina DeTagle went 5-for-8 and scored three times, while Amanda Goelz recorded three hits with a pair of doubles. Sara Hipson picked up an RBI.

Southpaw pitcher Amber Jack picked up both wins for the Bucs to remain undefeated at 7-0 to start the season. She tossed 15 innings of three-run ball, struck out 10 and walked three.

Against West Florida, the Buccaneers scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to squeeze out the win. Shyla Rider scored first off a Young RBI single in the third to put the Bucs up 1-0. Young followed with another RBI single in the fifth that scored DeTagle for the winning run. A leadoff walk in the sixth led to the Argonauts’ only run after Whitney Gay hit an RBI single to left center, but the Bucs managed to hold on for the 2-1 win.

DeTagle went 3-for-4, while Young finished with a pair of RBI singles to lead Barry at the plate. Jack tossed a complete seven innings of two-hit ball and struck out eight to pick up the win. Emily Burge (4-1) came into the game without allowing a single run in 23.0 innings, but gave up two runs and nine hits in the loss.

In the nightcap, the Buccaneers scored twice in the third and added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to hand #14 Alabama-Huntsville their first loss of the season. Young started the game for the Bucs in the circle, but after three leadoff hits, she was replaced by Jack who went eight innings and allowed six hits and two runs to pick up the win. Sage Woodham (5-1) gave up two runs in 3.2 innings of relief to suffer the UAH loss.

A three-hit first inning resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Chargers, but Young made up for a slow start with a two-RBI double in the third to give Barry a 2-1 lead. UAH’s Amy Harris belted a solo homer in the third to tie the game 2-2 and Erin Duke hit an RBI single in the following inning to give the Chargers a 3-2 lead. In the sixth, Goelz led the inning off with a double and later scored from third off Hipson’s sacrifice fly to left.

Heading into the international tiebreaker eighth inning, DeTagle was placed on third and scored on Young’s sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Chargers were unable to take advantage of the tiebreaker in the bottom half of the inning as Barry held on for the win. Goelz led Barry at the plate with a pair of doubles and DeTagle added a single and a double. Young drove in three runs including the game-winner. Marilyn Cooper, Amy Harris and Kristina Prater each recorded two hits to pace UAH.

The Buccaneers will conclude play at the Charger Chillout with a 9 am game against Southern Arkansas followed by an 11 am game against West Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 24. All-times are CST.
