WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Buccaneer women’s tennis team knocked off fifth-ranked West Florida (0-6) on Sunday at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex. The Bucs (8-2) recovered from a 2-1 deficit after doubles by winning four of six singles matches.
In doubles, UWF’s fifth-ranked pair of Suzana Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo handed Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens their first loss of the season 8-5 at the top flight. The other two flights were both routs, with Barry’s Helen Wisniewski and Angie Werschel beating Tatiana Rebolledo and Taylor Brewster 8-1 at the second flight and Berit Peterson and Olivia Lilien falling to UWF’s Renata Mattos and Tatiana Rodrigues by the same score at number three.
In singles, four of the six matches went to third sets, with the Bucs taking three of them. Tenth-ranked Csordas rebounded from her loss on Saturday to upset third-ranked Cavalcante 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Unranked Stevens also recorded an upset by knocking off #45 Arevalo 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
At three, #43 Mattos bumped off Barry’s #25-ranked Werschel 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. But Barry’s Wisniewski bounced back with a 7-6 (7), 7-5 win over Brewster at four.
UWF’s Rodrigues knocked off Saskia Kruse 7-5, 6-3 to tie the match at 4-4. Lilien finally clinched the match for the Bucs with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at number five over Rebolledo.
The Bucs return to Miami Shores, Fla., to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Monday.
