ALBANY, Ga. – The Barry University softball team (18-2) managed to pull out a pair of wins over the Albany State Golden Rams (5-9) at Golden Ram Field on Monday afternoon. The Buccaneers won the first game 3-1 and later capped off the series with a 5-2 win in eight innings.

In the Bucs’ second game, Amber Jack not only struck out 10 batters in the eight-inning win, but went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs to pace the Bucs on both ends of the field.

The Golden Rams opened the series by taking advantage of a Buccaneer throwing error early in the game that allowed Albany State a 1-0 lead. However, Barry responded with a three-run third inning that led to the win. With two outs, Cristina DeTagle and Ashley Likens had RBI hits that accounted two runs. Before closing out the inning, Barry managed to add one final run on an ASU error that led to the 3-1 win.

DeTagle went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Bucs at the plate, while Megan Young (5-2) struck out a career-high 13 batters for the win. Mindy Mager (2-5) gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out three in the loss.

The nightcap went scoreless for the first five innings until Barry managed to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Sara Hipson pinch hit for Amanda Goelz and reached on a two-out double. She later scored on Jack’s RBI single to give Barry the lead. However, Albany State’s Allyssa  Spellman belted a two-out solo home run to tie the game 1-1 and sent it into extra innings.

In the top of the eights, the Bucs pounded out four consecutive hits and plated four runs led by Jack’s two-RBI single. Albany State scored one run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Buccaneers managed to fend off any last minute surge for the 5-2 win. Jack (11-0) struck out 10 and collected three hits and three RBI at the plate to lead Barry on both ends past the Golden Rams in the nightcap.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 4 at #15 Valdosta State in a 2 pm doubleheader.
