MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University Women’s Basketball Team (18-10, 8-8 SSC) defeated Lynn University 65-59 in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 Wendy's Sunshine State Conference Basketball tournament at the Health & Sports Center.

Lucy Martinez punched the Buccaneers’ ticket to the SSC semifinals, making a layup with 1:14 remaining in the contest which gave the Bucs a 60-59 lead. The Knights led 59-56 with 2:29 remaining before the Buccaneers scored the final nine points to put the Fighting Knights away. Martinez scored four of the final nine points.

Christina Thompson put the Buccaneers on the board right away, sinking a three-pointer from behind the arc but poor shooting from the free throw line caused the Bucs problems early. From the line in the first half, Barry converted one of seven as opposed to the Knights, who made 11 of 12.

The Buccaneers built a seven-point lead in the early going of the half, 29-22. Lynn’s Jade Williams tied up the contest 29-29 with 4:54 remaining sinking one of two free throws after being fouled. At the 2:47 mark, A Natalie Basore jumper gave the Knights the 31-30 lead.

Both sides battled hard in the second half as the lead exchanged hands four times. Neither Barry nor Lynn could get a solid run going until the final two minutes. The Bucs also made eight of eleven free throws in the second half to help their cause.

Martinez finished the contest with 14 points while Thompson notched a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. Princess Bailey rounded out the offense with a 12-point night.

Jade Williams scored 20 points to lead the Knights. Crystal Ahmed added 10 points.  Lynn concluded the season with a 16-12, 7-8 mark in the SSC.

The Buccaneers will now travel to Tampa to meet Sunshine State Conference regular season champion Nova Southeastern in the semifinals. The meeting is slated for Saturday at 5:00 pm.
