Softball Sweeps Argonauts In Regional Match-Up

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Barry University softball team (20-2 ) completed a season sweep over the West Florida Argonauts (14-6) on Wednesday afternoon by winning both ends of a regional doubleheader at the UWF Softball Complex. The Buccaneers won the first game 3-0 and closed the day with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
 
Amanda Goelz went 4-for-7 in both games to pace the Buccaneers at the plate, while Megan Young also added four hits which included three doubles and two RBI. Holli Davis and Shyla Rider both finished with four RBI. Amber Jack and Young combined for 13 strikeouts and just one run to pick up wins in the circle for the Bucs.
 
Barry saved their best performance for last pounding out 16 hits en route to a 9-1 win in the nightcap. The Bucs erupted for an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. Young and Goelz led off with back-to-back doubles, but after two consecutive strikeouts Holli Davis hit a two-out two-RBI single to give Barry the lead. The Bucs finished the inning with five runs on six hits.
 
The Buccaneers added single runs in each of the final four innings with Davis and Ryder driving in three runs each. West Florida’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Julie Carole led off with a walk and reached third on consecutive wild pitches. She was later driven in by Whitney Gay’s RBI single.
 
In addition to two hits, Young (6-2) allowed just two hits, one run and struck out 10 to pick up the win for Barry. Emily Burge (4-2), who entered the game having allowed only two earned runs all season, gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 16 Buccaneer hits and struck out eight in the loss.
 
Barry opened the doubleheader with a 3-0 win over the Argonauts. Davis and Rider both drove in single runs in the second inning to give Barry a 2-0 lead. Cristina DeTagle led off the fifth inning with a double down the leftfield line and later scored the Bucs’ insurance run on Young’s RBI single.
 
Amber Jack (12-0) remained undefeated in the circle after tossing a one hit shutout and striking out three. Jillian LaFrance (5-3) gave up three runs (two earned), eight hits and struck out five in the loss. Young led the Bucs at the plate with two hits, while Nikki VanCamp recorded the Argos’ only hit.
 
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Friday at 9 am facing the Stillman Tigers in the first game of the Clark Atlanta Softball Invitational on Friday, Mar. 7 followed by match-ups with West Alabama and Claflin.
