Baseball Downs Riverhawks At Home

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University men’s baseball team (18-9) used an eight run second inning to win their second straight home game 11-7 over the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks (0-5) on Thursday night at Feinbloom Field.
 
The eight-run inning was sparked by an RBI single from Yudelmis Hernandez and was capped off by a three-run home run by Andrew Frezza. Both players led the Bucs with three RBI, while Aaron Main (4-2) hurled eight innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and struck out two.
 
Tim Manton led the game off with a walk in the top of the first and scored on Luke Wallace’s two-out RBI double to give UMass-Lowell a 1-0 lead. Tim Keene, who reached on a Buccaneer error, was waved home on the play, but was gunned down by Frezza at the plate to end the inning.
 
Joel Keefe led off the Bucs’ eight-run second inning with a stand-up double to right field. Hernandez ignited the scoring run with an RBI single and Frezza homered before Jeffrey Maloney managed to get the first out. After Frezza’s homer, he managed to get three consecutive outs, but the damaged had already been done. Barry recorded six hits in the inning.
 
In the fifth, the Riverhawks capitalized on another Buccaneer error and scored twice to cut into the Bucs’ lead. Barry answered in the bottom half of the same inning with another two runs that Hernandez doubled in to extend Barry’s lead to 10-3.
 
With the score 11-5 heading into the top of the ninth, the Riverhawks started a late rally scoring twice before reliever Josh Holmes managed to secure the final three outs to end the game. Barry held on to win 11-7.
 
Maloney (0-2) gave up 10 runs on nine hits and struck out two with three walks in the UMass-Lowell loss. Keene went 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Riverhawks at the plate.
 
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 21 hosting the Flagler Saints at 6 pm at Feinbloom Field in the first of a three-game series.
