MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After over three weeks hiatus from Sunshine State Conference competition, Barry University’s fourth-ranked softball team (26-2, 4-0 SSC) picked up a 2-0 win over the Lynn Fighting Knights on Tuesday night at Buccaneer Field, the first of a three-game series.

Ashley Likens and Holli Davis led the Bucs with two hits apiece, while both Megan Young and Amanda Goelz drove in single runs to pace Barry offensively. Junior southpaw Amber Jack remained undefeated at 15-0 in the circle tossing a complete game, five-hit shutout.

The Fighting Knights (16-22, 3-7 SSC) gave the Bucs a scare early in the second by loading the bases on three back-to-back singles. However, Jack struck out two and the Buccaneer defense got a force out at the plate to get out the jam.

Although the scoring was low, Barry’s two-run third inning was all it needed to take home the win. Shyla Rider reached on a one-out single that sparked three consecutive hits to load the bases. Young then hit an RBI single and Goelz grounded out to second to drive in the Bucs’ second run for the win.

Jack (15-0) struck out five in the win for Barry, while Lynn’s Cristie Kaufman (4-11) allowed two runs on nine hits and walked one. Candace VanderVeen went 2-for-3 to lead the Knights at the plate.

The Buccaneers will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 26 for a doubleheader with Lynn starting at 5 pm that will conclude the three-game SSC series.
